Performance characterization of a centrifugal pump

The objective of this project is to simulate flow through a centrifugal pump and obtain the pump performance curve. You will be running transient simulations, which are far more accurate than the Moving Reference Frame approach.


Thermal management simulation of a Hot Aisle and a cold Aisle containment system

The objective of this project is to simulate flow through a model data center and determine the air flow patterns and understand where potential hot spot regions appear. These type of simulations help us in understanding how the air and refrigeration systems need to be placed differently for different system layouts.

 

 

Simulation of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Heat exchangers occur in HVAC systems on air side loops, refrigerant loop and more. Learning how to simulate these systems, will help you understand how much pressure drop occurs and the effectiveness of Heat Exchangers.

What will you learn each week?

CONVERGE Studio module

In this module you will learn how to setup a CFD simulation using CONVERGE CFD. We will provide step by step instructions on the following:

  • CAD import and cleanup
  • Decomposing the model into boundaries and volumetric regions
  • Inputting valve timing
  • Choosing turbulence and combustion models
  • Running the case in parallel enviroment
  • Post-processing

Surface preparation

In this module, we will cover surface preparation in full detail. Here you will learn the following:

  • Setting up the moving boundaries
  • Geometry cleanup

Region intialization

In this module, you will learn the following concepts:

  • Initializing pressure, temperature and species concentration in different flow regions
  • Disconnect triangles

Turbulence modelling

In this module, you will learn how turbulence is modelled and simulated in a state of the art CFD solver. You will learn about the different classes of turbulence model and understand their merits and demerits.

Cavitation modelling

In this module, you will learn how cavitation can be simulated. We will be focussing on the Volume of Fluid Method.

Output Processing

In this module, you will learn how to extract critical output that is relevant to pumps and compressors.
