MULTIBODY     DYNAMICS

Multibody dynamics is an advanced set of tools for designing and optimizing multibody structural mechanics systems using finite element analysis (FEA).

Certification

Top 5% of the class will get a merit certificate. Course completion certificate will be provided to all students who complete the course. You will receive both an e-verified and hard copy of your certificates.

Projects

Motion assemblies and Interference check

  • Assemble automobile motion assemblies
  • Able to review and modify kinematic and dynamic characteristics of such assemblies

Simulate complex time-dependent dynamic systems

  • The compound pendulum is one of the most chaotic systems known to man and can be very unpredictable
  • Able to predict the location and velocity of the compound pendulum at any time instant accurately
  • Dynamic forces on the frame and joints can be measured as a function of time
  • Able to simulate any complex mechanism similar to this efficiently

Course Syllabus

Introduction to Multi-Body Dynamics (Theory, Background, and Motivation)

  • Importance of Multi-Body Dynamics in the industry
  • Difference between the FEA and MBD World
  • Force Equations
  • Industries using MBD
  • Evolution of Multi-Body Dynamics

Dive into Model Building

In this module, you will learn how to create and organize the parts in your mechanical system. You will also learn to connect the parts and provide the required constraints

  • Joints types that you will explore - Hinges, Sliders, Couplers, and Screws
  • Practical session: Simple Pendulum model building & simulation

Automobile Trunk Lid

  • Construct a four-bar mechanism using the fundamental model-building techniques in MBD
  • Import the BIW structures into GUI
  • Simulation of the automobile trunk lid
  • Use collision detection to evaluate the mechanism
  • Add torque to drive mechanism and use functions to limit joint motion
  • Create output to measure torque
  • Compare dynamics to kinematics simulation

2D and 3D Contact Simulation

  • Introduction to the concepts of 2D and 3D contacts
  • Model building and Simulation of Cam follower and Ball Bearing
  • Measure the force output in the Curve to curve joint in the cam-follower to detect lift-off
  • Computation of the Normal and Tangential contact forces in the Ball Bearing
  • Animation of Penetration Depth and Contact Penetration Velocity in the Ball Bearing

Introduction to Flexible Bodies

  • Technical Overview of Flexible Bodies
