Syllabus

Week 1 : Introduction

In this chapter we will go through :   

  • Interface of STAAD
  • Introduction to various sections of STAAD software

Week 2 : Geometric modelling

In this chapter, we will learn about various methods of modelling engineering problems and the applicability of various modelling elements like beams, plates, shell elements etc. in different situations.

    Week 3 : Loading (Part 1)

    In this chapter, we will discuss about the most commonly applicable loading conditions (eg. Dead, live, seismic, wind loads) in the simulations perfromed in the industry and how to apply these conditions to our models.

    Week 4 : Loading (Part 2)

    This chapter explains about the commonly used non-typical loading conditions like moving loads, time history loading etc.

    Week 5 : Specifications & Support conditions

    In this chapter, we will cover different types of supporting conditions and their applications. This will include a detailed discussion about normal springs, multilinear springs, tension/ compression only springs and inclined supports.

    Week 6  : Analysis and understanding the Results (Including result extraction)

    This chapter includes a detailed description of reading, understanding and extracting of results for different types of design elements and using the extracted results for design of elements in spreadsheets.

    Week 7 : Concrete Structure Design

    This chapter includes a discussion on the design section of STAAD. It includes selection of design parameters, defining those parameters and understanding the impact of each definition in our design.

    Week 8 : Steel Structure Modelling + Analysis + Design

    This chapter will cover modelling, analysis and design of steel structures and the differences with concrete structure analysis & design.

    Week 9 : Underground structures in STAAD

    Here, we will deal with a tunnel problem and see the application of STAAD in analysis and design of the tunnel section. The module will highlight the key differences of dealing with underground structures.

    Week 10 : Error Handling

    We will discuss the errors and warnings commonly encountered when designing a structure and the steps to resolve those errors.

    Week 11 : Dynamic Analysis

    This section will include a problem that involves dynamic analysis of a structure and discuss industrial problems that need such analysis.

    Week 12 : Misc. items using section wizard, structure wizard etc. and Industry practice

    This chapter will include a discussion of some of the in-built features to aid our modelling needs and how to use them efficiently in different situations. This is a brief sum-up of all the previous sessions.
