Module 1 - Introduction to IoT

The IoT collects data from the physical world and connects it to the internet through information received from sensors, hardware, and processors that are interfaced with software. In the healthcare industry, IoT devices like wearable health monitoring systems acquire data from the human body and transfer it to a network for medical professionals to view remotely. To gain an established understanding of IoT, learners must know how wireless communication takes place in the IoT network.

In this module, you will learn about

  • Basics of IoT and Communication Technologies
  • Uses of IoT – Smart Cities, Smart Living, Smart Energy, Smart Learning, and Smart Health
  • Wireless Communication Standards – ZigBee, Bluetooth, and WiFi.
  • Challenges of using IoT in Healthcare
  • Uses of IoT in Healthcare Systems – Patient monitoring & diagnostics, home healthcare, personal health care, and fitness

Module 2 - Wearable Health Monitoring System (WHMS)

Through wearable health monitoring systems, otherwise known as wearable health devices, the vital parameters of an individual can be monitored continuously. This enables monitoring of patients in remote settings or clinical environments. For engineers in this field, it is important to understand how wearable health monitoring systems work, and their different applications in the healthcare industry.

In this module, you will learn about

  • Basics of Wearable Health Monitoring System (WHMS)
  • Need for Wearable Systems
  • Applications of WHMS - Soldiers, Astronauts, SIDS, Home Healthcare, Sports/Fitness, Disaster, COVID, Haptics, and more
  • Design of Wearable Computer - Introduction, Architecture, and Attributes
  • Design of Smart Textiles, Wearable Electronics, Dry Electrodes, and Textile Electrodes
  • Issues of WHMS & Factors Inhibiting Growth

Module 3 - IoT Architecture and Protocols

There are multiple elements like sensors, processors, networks, software, actuators, cloud services, and more that make up an IoT system in the healthcare industry. This is referred to as IoT architecture. It is important for learners to understand the networking architecture, sensors, servers, and interfaces in the IoT to know the ins and outs of data transfer within the system.

In this module, you will learn about

  • Networking Architectures, OSI and TCP/IP
  • Protocols and Standardization for IoT - M2M, RFID, SCADA, and BACNet
  • Basic Client-Server Communication Model
  • Network Sockets, Ports, IP and APIs
  • Sensor Interfaces – ECG, EEG, PPG, Pulse Oximeter, Temperature Sensors, and Pressure Sensors
  • Raspberry Pi and Python Programming

Module 4 - Wireless Body Area Network and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)

Wireless body area networks have a series of sensor nodes connected together in order to measure vital signals from the human body. These networks function to enhance patient quality life. The Internet of Medical Things has medical equipment, applications, and software connected together to transfer data. It is important for learners to understand how data is transferred within these systems.

In this module, you will learn about

  • Basics of Wireless Sensor Networks and Applications
  • Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN)
  • WBAN Architecture and Topology.
  • Routing Protocols and Security
  • Energy Harvesting
  • IoMT in Healthcare Introduction and Architecture
  • Wearable IoMT
